Reimbursement of housing tax: how do I obtain payment if I do not pay by direct debit? | Personal finance | Finance

But many wonder what will happen if they don’t have direct debit. The government money is a measure to help with the soaring cost of living, for all eligible residents in tax bracket A to D.

For many people, the money will be paid automatically, but not for those who pay council tax by direct debit.

In this case, local councils will contact residents with details of how to claim the refund.

There is no need to do anything in the meantime.

Each board is responsible for processing rebates in the method it chooses.

The rebate will be provided as a separate payment, rather than as part of the municipal tax bill.

Where a household is eligible for the rebate and their local council does not already have payment details, payment can be made as a council tax account credit.

Around 80% of UK households are eligible for the cash.

Many councils have put instructions and advice on their websites on how to claim it and when people can expect to receive the payouts.

Technical problems delayed some of the payments, which were originally due to be made in April.

Residents have been told that in some cases the money could take up to six months to be paid.

Some residents of Bands E through H received the rebate by accident and have now been asked to repay the funds.

Some 3,000 Lincolnshire residents received the money in error, with the money due to be automatically deducted in July.

Previously, around 25,000 Leeds households had received the rebate twice in April.

People in bands E to H can still get help paying their energy bills, but they must apply through the discretionary Household Support Fund program.

The exact eligibility criteria for discretionary funding are to be decided by each board.

Residents will need to contact their local authority or check their website to see if they are eligible for help.

The residence tax rebate does not have to be refunded.

The British will be able to find out their housing tax bracket online.

The refund was one of many measures to help Britons during the cost of living crisis.

Additional support was also announced for pensioners, people with disabilities and people on certain benefits.
