Mercom Capital Group Releases Report on Global Leading Utility-Scale Solar PV Developers in 2021 | Company

AUSTIN, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–August 30, 2022–

Mercom Capital Groupa global clean energy communications, research and consulting firm, has released a new report announcing the 2021 world’s leading utility-scale photovoltaic system developers covering the period July 2020 to June 2021.

With 4.95 GW of operational projects, the Italian company Enel Green Power has become the world’s leading developer of solar photovoltaic systems in terms of operational capacity, followed closely by the Indian company Adani Green Energy (4.91 GW), the company French Engie (3.47 GW) ranking third. .

In terms of capacity under construction and allocated, Canadian Solar led the world’s developers with 22.2 GW, followed by Lightsource bp with 20.9 GW.

With a total capacity of 23.6 GW, Lightsource bp became the world’s leading solar PV developer based on operational, under construction and awarded (under contract) projects, closely followed by Canadian Solar with 23.5 GW. Brookfield Renewables ranked third with 19.5 GW.

When compiling this global report, a key qualifying criterion was developers with projects in at least two countries.

Major developers include several renewable energy arms of industrial and energy conglomerates, subsidiaries of asset management companies, and pure-play renewable and solar companies. They came from all over the world, including the UK, Canada, USA, India, Italy, Norway, France and Germany.

The top 10 developers represent over 125 GW of operational, under construction and awarded (under contract) solar projects. For projects under construction and awarded, leading utility-scale solar developers accounted for nearly 100 GW.

There were significant changes in the top 10 list from the previous year due to some large M&A deals in the industry, with gigawatt-scale portfolios changing hands. According 2020 Mercom Solar Financing and M&A Reportapproximately 40 GW of projects changed hands in calendar year 2020. During the July 2020 to June 2021 reporting period, over 64 GW of projects were acquired across the world.

Among the top 10 global solar developers, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region accounted for approximately 24% of developer capacity; North America at around 18%; and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at around 20%. About 38% of the projects were located in Latin America.

A significant number of facilities and projects being built by top developers were in Latin America. Countries like Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Argentina have good solar resources and are experiencing lower prices and favorable policies.
