Leicester’s Curve marking Diwali with a day of free activities including dance, music and Mehndi art

Curve invites members of the public to join in a day of celebrations to mark Diwali.

The downtown theater will host a community day on Saturday, October 30, featuring an array of free activities.

Running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Curve’s Community Diwali Day – in association with An Indian Summer – will feature activities and performances for all ages, including Mehndi art, classical Indian music and dance, Drama Theater. ‘shadows, storytelling workshops, comedy, poetry and more.

Here’s what you can participate in on Saturday ….

Storytelling workshop with Chandni Mistry

For 0 – 4 year olds and families: 10:15 a.m. – 11 a.m., 11:15 a.m. – 12 p.m. | Rehearsal room 2

For 5 – 15 year olds and families: 1:15 p.m. – 2 p.m., 2:15 p.m. – 3 p.m. | Rehearsal room 2

Join Chandni Mistry for interactive storytelling sessions featuring dramatic games and movements to capture the magic of the festival and all the delicious food that comes with it.

These sessions are free but must be booked in advance.

Neil Donoghue and Jay Gandecha

10 am – 11 am | Home scene

12 p.m. – 1 p.m. | Green room cafe

Take a seat for an hour of classic Indian ragas as Neil (Sitar) and Jay (Tabla) fill Curve with the sound of these incredible instruments.



Make your own shadow puppet

Mr Cleaver’s monsters

10 am – 3 pm | Mezzanine

Make your own Ramayana puppet in this hands-on workshop with Mr Cleaver! Choose from Ram,

Sita, Hanuman or Monkey Soldier, assemble your creation then test your make-up with a puppet selfie.

Mehndi Art with Minal Parmar

10 am – 3 pm | Green room cafe

Mehndi is a form of temporary body art, in which intricate designs are created on the body using a paste created from the powdered dried leaves of the henna plant.

Minal Parmar from The Beauty Refinery will offer Mehndi for free in a design of your choice.

Banyan Tree: South Asian Dance 2000 – 2020

10 am – 3 pm | Mezzanine

Kadam Dance and Pulse magazine’s latest exhibition celebrates dance artists who brought their unique take on dance to the UK, primarily through the lens of great photographer Simon Richardson. The images tell the story of contemporary creators and performers and of those whose forms they inherited.

Nupur Arts: Bollywood and Classical Workshop

10:15 am | Studio

Join the Curve Associate Nupur Arts company in this upbeat and complex dance workshop on Bollywood and semi-classical Indian dance with their specialist tutors, suitable for all ages and skill levels.

This workshop is free but places must be reserved in advance.

Poetry workshop with Shruti Chauhan

11 a.m. – 12 p.m. | Home scene

Shruti Chauhan is a British Indian poet and performer based in Leicester. She has won slams in Chicago and Mumbai and has performed at numerous poetry festivals and events across the UK.

In this workshop, Shruti will help you find your own way with words and write a poem based on a theme of your choice.

Curve Resident Creatives Center for Indian Classical Dance (CICD) will bring lots of color and movement in this half hour of classical and Bollywood dance.

This show is free but seats must be reserved in advance.

Kathak Workshop of the Indian Classical Dance Center

12 p.m. – 1 p.m., 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. | Studio

Join CICD for introductory Kathak workshops. Derived from the word Katha, which means “story,” Kathak dance is a form of storytelling through intricate hand movements, rhythmic footwork, and facial expression. In these fun and relaxed workshops, you will learn basic form movements, as well as body mime and Bollywood dancing to tell your own story.

These sessions are free but must be booked in advance.

Hari Trivedi and Marcus Joseph

12 p.m. – 1 p.m. | Home scene

Accomplished tabla player Hari Trivedi and local jazz favorite Marcus Joseph come together to perform a mix of Indian melodies with a unique twist.

Midlands Shiamak

1 p.m. – 2 p.m. | Home scene

Join Jayna and Swapnil from Shiamak Midlands for an hour of fantastic live Bollywood dancing! You will also have the opportunity to learn new movements in a fun and open workshop after the performance.

Laughter Yoga with Ishi Khan-Jackson



2 p.m. – 3 p.m. | Home scene

Ishi Khan-Jackson has been laughing since she was born, and now she’s bringing the funny to Curve! Join Ishi for an hour of uplifting yoga and Bollywood comedy.
