The La Porte City Band will be giving their next free concert this Wednesday, July 21 at 7 p.m. at the Dennis F. Smith Amphitheater in Fox Park. The group is under the direction of Charles Steck.
This week’s soloists will be Elin Boklund and Alex Gushrowski.
Elin is entering her fourth year as a music educator. She currently teaches saxophone at the School of American Music in Three Oaks, Michigan. After graduating from La Porte High School, she attended VanderCook College of Music in Chicago and took advantage of performing opportunities in many popular venues in the Chicago area. She has been a member of the La Porte City Band for five years and a member of the Down by the Dock Jazz Band for eight years. She is pursuing her Masters in Music Education.
Born and raised in La Porte, Alex graduated from La Porte High School in 2017 and is currently studying music and vocal performance in his final year at Ball State University. Alex was trained as a lyric tenor and studied with various voice teachers and coaches including Chuck Steck and Thomas Coe, his former high school choir teachers. He was in productions of La Porte Little Theater during high school and participates in the theater department of the Ball State Opera and the Fifth Cellar Production Company in Muncie. He hopes to continue his studies as a performer with his Masters program in vocal performance. From there, Alex hopes to build a career as a singer and performer in opera, art songs and musical theater.
