Aston Villa move for Ginter rejected after ‘big budget’ offer

Borussia Mönchengladbach star Matthias Ginter has rejected a summer move to Aston Villa, Football Insider understand.

The Midlands giants have pushed hard to sign the 28-year-old as they look to overhaul their defense in the coming window.

A recruiting source said Football Insider that Ginter has turned down a ‘fat’ contract offer from Villa and is instead set to join his former club Freiburg.

It’s a blow to Steven Gerrard and the Villa recruitment team, who were hoping to cash in on Ginter’s impending free agent status.

The 46-time German international is out of contract at Mönchengladbach at the end of next month.

The Claret and Blues are on the hunt for a centre-half this summer and have identified Ginter as a potential option.

Gerrard plans to revamp his defense in the next window and sever the partnership of Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konza.

None of the defenders have convinced Gerrard since his appointment in November.

The Villa boss has made it clear behind the scenes that the current squad is not good enough to fulfill the owners’ ambitions.

ginter has made 30 appearances in all competitions this season and scored once.

The centre-half joined Borussia Mönchengladbach in a nearly £15m deal from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017.

He is now set to return to his boyhood club Freiburg, which he left in July 2014.

In other news, a source has revealed the door has opened for Tottenham and Aston Villa to sign a Serie A star after a £15m revelation.
